Hey, young black male in the hood, here’s another way at seeing how the hacking methodology totally aligns with our street science. Footprinting is a first step in the evaluation of the security posture of a target organization’s IT infrastructure.
Ya see it? I know you do! What the methodology calls footprinting, we call it what? “Scoping out the spot”, “checking [insert] out”, “Peeping out the scene”, etc.
It’s what the Godz call “doing the math”. Which is exactly what you do when you’re about to get on that paper chase. Before setting out to get the scrilla, scratch, loot, money, etc, you must do some recon. Some footprinting. Some math.

Whereas, what institutional cirriculums unfortunately “refer” to as hacking is illegal. (It’s not unfortunate that hacking is illegal, it’s unfortunate that the illegal activity of breaking into someone’s org is “referred” to as hacking). Breaking into someone’s stuff is burlgary. If you take something while you’re there that’s called stealing. Both of which are crimes.
This type of hacking isn’t criminal.
So, is it legal to scope out what homeboy and his crew have going on in that hood over there? Maybe. Are he and you both under the agreement this “footprinting” is happening? Well, I suppose that’s for you and homeboy to know and for everyone else to find out. That’s called y’alls non-disclosure agreement. We go into what a NDA is later.
